“Orlando” – Series

A major inspiration for my art works emanates from my own experience as a person undergoing a gender transition process. This is something that resonates not only on a personal level, but that also raises wider questions about the notion of gender.

Using elements from Jack Halberstam and Judith Butler’s respective theories of female masculinity and performative gender, I have aimed for my art practise to explore the blurring of boundaries between Masculinity and Femininity, and to aid in the dismantling of cultural tropology’s.

“Orlando” is a long-term autobiographical project , in which I explore the deconstruction and reconstruction of gender identity through varying stages of the transition process. In this series I mainly use my body, as a symbolic force that can perform the unconscious and heterogeneous forces involved in the gender transition process.

My aim is to create a body of work that questions femininity, masculinity and ultimately the notion of gender itself. In doing this, I’m not just telling my own story and experience and l am not simply seeking to raise awareness about transpeople. My aim is to create a body of work that questions femininity, masculinity and ultimately the notion of gender itself.
