Chi appartiene al mondo LGBTQ si è spesso confrontato con la questione delle “etichette”. Etichette che a volte aiutano a definirsi ma che per lo più stanno strette o addirittura vengono rifiutate.
Sarah Deragon, fotografa ritrattista californiana, ha fatto di questo tema il punto di partenza di un viaggio all’interno della multiforme identità delle persone LGBTQ, con il progetto The Identity Project. A chi si fa ritrarre non chiede “come vieni definito?”, ma “come ti definisci?”. Ne è così risultato un insieme di centinaia di ritratti in cui le persone hanno letteralmente inventato la propria definizione…e nessuna è uguale all’altra.
A Sarah l’idea è venuta per gioco il giorno in cui, nel 2014, postò un ritratto fattole dalla moglie, anch’essa fotografa, con la scritta Queer Femme…
Lanciò poi l’idea fra i propri amici della Bay Area e su Facebook. Nell’arco di 6 mesi aveva già realizzato 100 ritratti nel suo studio fotografico a San Francisco. Presto l’interesse per il progetto si allargò oltre i confini di San Francisco, quando gruppi LGBTQ cominciarono a contattare Deragon chiedendole di realizzare delle sessioni fotografiche nella loro città. E così The Identity Project è divenuto un viaggio anche in senso letterale, che ha portato Sarah a Washington, New York, Portland, Chicago, Austin. Fino ad arrivare, recentemente, anche a San Pietroburgo.
Il suo intento è quello di dare alle persone la possibilità di esprimere la propria individuale identità, così come di dare visibilità alla comunità LGBTQ, uscendo dagli stereotipi per lasciare spazio alla sua multiforme varietà. Fin dagli studi universitari Sarah si è interessata al tema dell’identità e all’importanza per una comunità di vedere la propria immagine positivamente rappresentata e riflessa nel mondo.
Il ritratto che ne risulta è di persone orgogliose, che positivamente vivono ed esprimono la propria singolarità. Persone creative che non si adattano alle etichette, ma inventano la propria specifica identità, giocando col linguaggio fino a coniare nuovi termini e definizioni.

LGBTQ people have to deal often in their life with the “label issue”, where labels sometimes support self-identification but sometimes are far too tight and therefore are rejected.
The Californian photographer Sarah Deragon made “The Identity Project” out of this issue in order to explore the variety of LGBTQ identities. To people that partake in the project she is not asking “how are you defined” but “how do you define yourself?”.
Sarah came up with the project idea after she had posted on Facebook a portrait made by her wife, who is a photographer too. The portrait was labelled Queer Femme…
Then she launched the idea among her friends in the Bay Area and on Facebook. After six months she had already 100 portraits. The project spread and other LGBTQ communities from other States asked to organize photo sessions in their cities. So Sarah started travelling through the USA (San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, New York, Austin, Pullman, Washington at Washington State University) and even St. Petersburg in Russia.
Since Deragon was studying at University she was was interested in identity issues and in the importance for a community to be positive represented in face of the world. Her goal is to give people the opportunity to express their individual identity and to overcome the stereotypes attached to the LGBTQ community.
The overall portrait of this community is that of proud and joyful people, who do not conform to given labels but create their own identity, playing with language in order to create new definitions.
The Identity Project counts up to date over 200 portraits in which every participant literally has created its own definition…and all of them are different.
